SHIFTING SOURCES OF DEFENSIBILITY FROM AI DISRUPTION.

Software IP and developer moats are eroding as AI democratises code. Proprietary data, distribution network, compliance workflow, network effects, scale and deep vertical expertise advantages are becoming defining sources of durable value.

1. Software IP / Code Complexity

AI can create and refactor code rapidly. Barriers built on technical complexity or large software teams are increasingly fragile.

2. Switching Friction

Agents and AI-assisted migrations between systems is reducing switching effort, time and costs.

3. Feature Differentiation

Point solutions are rapidly commoditised. AI enables competitors to ship equivalent functionality in weeks, not months.

4. Developer and App Ecosystems

Applications built on top of SaaS 1.0 ecosystems can now quickly be built, customised and integrated with SaaS platforms in house using AI software development tools.

1. Unique, Proprietary Data for AI Agent Context

Unique and growing datasets are a durable advantage especially if AI / agents can be fine-tuned on them. Notion's organisation knowledge or Sitemate’s construction operations data, cannot be easily replicated by an AI startup or foundation model.

2. Customer and Partner Network Trust

AI native cannot easily match the customer trust and established distribution partner networks of incumbent SaaS. Xero’s accountant network is unlikely to recommend their SMB clients to vibe code their own accounting tools.

3. Regulatory & Compliance Workflow

For SaaS 1.0 who sell into highly regulated industries like financial services or healthcare, regulatory approval and compliance infrastructure are multi-year, high-cost moats. Switching to AI native alternatives are high cost and high risk

4. Network Effects

Platforms with strong supply/demand loops (e.g. Pagaleve’s merchant and user network) compound customer value and defensibility with scale.

5. Scale and Deeply Embedded in Vertical Workflow

Vertical SaaS companies who are multi-product and deeply embedded in niche workflows and data sets are harder to replicate. Scale of user base, data and systems are barriers to entry.
